As per the latest reports, Celtic have confirmed the signing of Timothy Weah from Paris Saint Germain on a six-month loan. The deal was talked about for quite some time, and now we have the official confirmation that the 18-year-old American international is going to play for the Hoops until the end of the season.
A striker was always going to be on the agenda of the club ever since Moussa Dembele departed in the summer. The unavailability of Leigh Griffiths hasn’t helped Rodgers’ cause either, and the manager earlier claimed (Sky Sports) that they might bring in as many as two strikers in the winter transfer period. The first one is confirmed now as Weah is going to turn out at Park Head.
The 18-year-old forward has made senior team appearances for the French heavyweights, but it was clear that he would struggle to get regular playing time given the quality of players Thomas Tuchel has at his disposal.
Rodgers looked satisfied with his newest appointment and was quoted as saying,”With the quality of players they have, it’s difficult for him to get in and get any game time. Timothy’s a young talent who is full international player. He has a long career ahead of him, but he has those natural attributes in terms of his pace and technique. He’s hungry too.”
We can soon see Weah in action as the Hoops currently have only Odsonne Edouard as their only available striker. With Europa League to also contest in, it was imperative for the club to sign a striker early in the transfer market.
The youngster has a big name to live up to as his father is a former Balon d’Or winner George Weah. The forward had signed a new deal with PSG not too long ago and is contracted to stay with them until 2021. It is believed that Celtic won’t have a chance to make this move permanent in the future as the French heavyweights still rate him highly but were unable to give him game time as they had the likes of Mbappe, Neymar, Edinson Cavani and Angel Di Maria who usually start in the attacking third.
The striker has fearful pace, and he can thrive in the Scottish Premiership if he gets used to the physicality and tempo of the league. It is likely that he would be an understudy to Edouard at the start, but given his talent, one wouldn’t be surprised if he challenges the Frenchman for a starting place. All in all, the Hoops have made a decent signing who can have an impact in this tight title race.
