Marcelo Bielsa has been quite adamant in his approach, and he has often played down (Leeds Live) the idea of the Whites adding any reinforcements in the transfer period. However, recently the manager did admit that getting some new faces wouldn’t be a bad idea and indicated that they could be after a winger.
He was quoted as saying,”If the club can get players who are better than the ones we already have come and in the position where we suffered some injuries, for example, Samu Saiz left, Pablo [Hernandez] now plays as a playmaker and we need a winger. If players come, it will be better. From what I know the position of the club is if we bring a player in, it has to be a player that improves the group.”
We look at three wingers the club can sign in January.
Ibai Gomez
Leeds United have been linked with this Spanish winger for quite some time and latest reports from Mundo Deportivo indicates that his club are willing to let the winger leave on a bargain as he is in the last six months of his contract. Gomez can have an instant impact in the current squad and his creativeness and guile would come in handy. Moreover, the winger had played under Bielsa before when he was the manager of Atheltic Bilbao and so the gaffer would know what he is getting into if the Whites manage to lure him to Elland Road.
Jeremain Lens
The Besiktas winger too has been linked (Haberturk) with a move to Elland Road and we believe from the form he has shown for Besiktas this season, the former Sunderland player can be another game changer in January. Reports from Turkish media outlet suggest that the Turkish giants could look to sell the winger and are looking to get €5m for him. The Dutchman might be 31, but we believe he can still play at the top level for the next 2-3 years and a signing like this would ensure United’s smooth passage to the Premier League as the winger can hit the ground running straight away.
Steven Zuber
The Swiss winger has struggled for game time this season with Hoffenheim and he has been linked (Bild) with a move to Leeds United. Zuber plays as an inverted winger down the left flank but he has often been Nagelsmann’s go-to man to fill in other spots across the pitch. He has played as an attacking midfielder when required as well as a fullback.
We have already seen Bielsa wanting his players to be flexible and quite a few of them have often been used in various positions. Zuer has all the elements of a ‘Bielsa type’ of player and the Whites should definitely consider him.
