According to a recent report by Tuttomercatoweb, AS Roma has stolen a march over Arsenal in the chase to secure the services of Hector Herrera from FC Porto. The Express claims that the Gunners are still looking to find a replacement for Aaron Ramsey, who will leave the club at the end of this campaign, and have identified the Liga NOS ace as an ideal candidate to fill the boots of the Welshman in the summer.
The 28-year-old has been in fine form and has put in some dazzling displays for FC Porto this season. He has featured in 24 matches for the Portuguese giants this term, finding the back of the net three times while creating one assist across all competitions. He has a knack for scoring goals from midfield which is why two of the best European clubs are interested in his services.
The Mexican talent is vastly experienced at the international level, having earned 70 international caps for the Mexican national side and scoring five goals for them so far. At 28, Herrera is playing the best football of his career at this moment, so this could be an ideal opportunity for him to move to a foreign club in search of more challenging adventures.
The Tijuana-born talent is a multi-purpose midfielder who can do a bit of everything at the centre of the park. He primarily operates as a holding midfielder but can also play in a more advanced role in midfield. He has improved his game a lot over the past few years so it might just be the right time for him to switch clubs and win some major trophies for one of the top clubs in Europe.
The addition of Herrera will undoubtedly improve Unai Emery’s midfield options at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners have the likes of Lucas Torreira, Granit Xhaka, Matteo Guendouzi and Mohamed Elneny fighting for a midfield berth in Emery’s starting XI. Hence, someone like Herrera will add some calmness and composure to the Gunners midfield as that is something which has been lacking at times this season.
There are enough reasons for Emery to go all out for the experienced Porto midfielder in the coming months as the current Arsenal midfield clearly lacks some depth and a bit of quality at this moment.
