According to a recent report by the Bild, Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a move for 1899 TSG Hoffenheim midfielder Florian Grillitsch and are prepared to battle it out with Arsenal in pursuit of the Austrian talent’s signature. The same report goes on to state that the Bundesliga prospect’s agent Thomas Boehm was in England last week which shouldn’t surprise anyone as Hoffenheim were playing Manchester City in their final group stage game of the UEFA Champions League.
It has also been mentioned by the Bild that when Boehm was quizzed about his client’s future, he said, “The fact that Flo is in the focus of top clubs with his strong performances, is no big secret.”
“But he feels comfortable at Hoffenheim and still has goals with the club.”
Grillitsch has been a regular feature for the German team and has caught the eye with some solid displays in midfield throughout this season so far. Spurs are still looking for a long-term successor to Mousa Dembele. The Belgian is currently out of action with an ankle problem, and Grillitsch could fit the bill perfectly at North London.
The Austrian talent grew up playing football back in his homeland and spent the bulk of his youth career with AKA St. Pölten. Back in 2014, Werder Bremen decided to give him a chance by bringing him to the German top-flight. He spent three years at the Bundesliga club before Hoffenheim came calling and signed him as a free agent in the summer of 2017.
Grillitsch has featured in 18 matches for Julian Nagelsmann’s side this season and has one goal to his name across all competitions. The 23-year-old has played in all six of Hoffenheim’s Champions League matches this season and has caught the attention of Spurs chiefs.
His addition would undoubtedly bolster Mauricio Pochettino’s midfield options at North London. Tottenham is in need of an out and out defensive midfielder with Harry Winks, Eric Dier, Moussa Sissoko, Victor Wanyama and Dembele all battling for a starting berth in the Spurs midfield. Grillitsch will be an ideal fit for Pochettino’s brand of football at Tottenham and his defensive qualities in midfield could make him a shrewd long-term acquisition for the North London giants.
