Tottenham Hotspur have surprised everyone as they currently sit six points from the top of the table and are ahead of Manchester City in the title race currently. Mauricio Pochettino’s men also have a decent chance of winning the Carabao Cup as they have made it to the semi-finals. The progress they have made might be a surprise to many as they didn’t spend a single penny in the summer transfer period but they can look to do some business in the upcoming month.
Latest reports from the Express suggests that Spurs are looking to sign Barcelona’s midfielder Rafinha. The Brazilian midfielder though is set to be out for some time as he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the tie against Atletico Madrid last month. So it is quite surprising that Pochettino is looking to sign a player who can be out for the next few months.
It is reported that Barcelona are eyeing a fee of £35m and at the present moment, we feel it doesn’t make sense for Spurs to splash that kind of cash for an injured midfielder. They should rather wait it out and look to pull off this deal in the summer if they are really interested in Rafinha. However, they are set to face competition from AS Roma for the midfielder’s signature.
Spurs are likely to lose Mousa Dembele as he is currently in the final year of his contract. The Belgian was heavily linked (The Independent) with a move away from the North London club in the summer, but he stayed put. However, we don’t see Spurs giving him a new contract. Victor Wanyama is another midfielder who has struggled to get going ever since his signing, and the Kenyan has been out with an injury for most of the time.
Spurs have Eric Dier and Harry Winks as their main central midfielders, and they can do with a signing like Rafinha in the future. The Brazilian has shown promising signs but has never really managed to establish himself in the star-studded Barcelona lineup.
After the departure of Xavi and Andres Iniesta; Rafinha was supposed to step up. However, it seems like the 25-year-old might struggle to keep his place. Before the injury, he had made just five appearances in the La Liga, and the player might look for a move away to play regular football.
The 25-year-old is a decent passer of the ball and also has that robust side to his game which should hold him in good stead in the Premier League. However, given his major injury, we don’t think Spurs should go after the Brazilian midfielder in January, and they can try their luck next summer.
