Reports from the Spanish media Marca as cited by Sky Sports, suggests that Real Madrid are interested in a move for Christian Eriksen who is reluctant to sign a new contract with the North London club. The Danish midfielder has been at the club since 2013 and currently has his contract until 2020. It is no surprise that some of the top clubs could be after him given how good he has been for Spurs in the last few years.
However, Spurs are not going to let him go for cheap, and it is believed that Daniel Levy might demand in excess of £200m for his playmaker. That is undoubtedly an exorbitant price, and maybe it is the club’s way to put off potential suitors. But the player’s head could definitely turn if Madrid comes after him.
Ever since Cristiano Ronaldo departed, the Galacticos have struggled especially in terms of scoring goals freely, and maybe someone like Eriksen can give them the much-needed boost. Spurs need to be careful as two of their best players in the past (Gareth Bale and Luka Modric) couldn’t resist leaving for Real Madrid, and someone like Eriksen might also join that list.
Spurs have certainly done well in the past few seasons especially since Mauricio Pochettino took over at the club, but many still doubt their title credentials and ability to win big trophies. Eriksen has been at the club for five years now, and he is yet to lay his hands on a single title, and that could be one of the reasons why Tottenham can lose him in the future.
With new contract talks stalling, signs are definitely not good for the Spurs faithful. But one cannot blame the player either. Eriksen is still 26 and is currently in the prime of his career, and there is no doubt that he would love to be part of some big title triumphs before he retires. This current ongoing season could be the make or break one for Pochettino. We believe that there is a good possibility that if he fails to end his side’s title drought, Spurs might have to accept losing some of their key players including their Danish midfielder.
The Denmark international is an out and out no. 10 and it’s his intelligence in the attacking third which makes the real difference. His ability to provide a killer pass in the final third is one of the best in the Premier League, and he has racked up 75 assists for Tottenham so far.
Madrid have been relatively silent in the last few transfer windows, and they can be expected to go in hard in the next few transfer windows. Tottenham fans should definitely be worried if there is an official approach for Eriksen in the future.
