Rangers have already done business in the transfer market as they have offered a contract (Daily Record) to the likes of Andrew Gutman and Matt Polster who were on trial at the club and had impressed Gerrard in their time at Glasgow. However, according to American Soccer Now, both the players are yet made a final decision, and it remains to be seen what would transpire in the next few days.
Matt Polster is the more experienced player of the two as the 25-year-old has made 90 appearances in the Major League Soccer for Chicago Fire. Polster is a fullback turned midfielder, and maybe Gerrard is looking at him to provide options in midfield after Ovie Ejaria left the club midway through his loan spell.
Andrew Gutman is a young left back who plays college football for Indiana University and hasn’t yet signed a professional contract with an MLS outfit. Gutman is likely to be more of a long-term prospect at the club, and he is going to spend some time with the youth squad before he gets into the reckoning to play for the senior team.
Polster, on the other hand, is in the final year of his contract with Chicago Fire and had previously played against Steven Gerrard when he joined LA Galaxy in the latter stages of his career. Reports add that Polster is currently in two minds regarding whether to accept the contract and to make the big switch in his career from America to Scotland. On the other hand, it is expected that Gutman is going to accept the deal which the Gers have offered to him.
Gerrard talked about the duo and said, ”We have a couple of trialists from the US who are looking for the next challenge in their career. I know one of them and played against him in the MLS – Matt Polster, who played for Chicago Fire and who I know is a good player and Andrew Gutman, who’s one from the college system and is very highly thought of.”
Borna Barisic has turned out to be injury prone and Andy Halliday and Jon Flanagan have often deputised for him in the left back role. Gutman is definitely not the short-term option for the club in the left-back spot but he can turn out to be a handful in the next few seasons given his talent.
Polster’s versatility is going to come in handy as he can play as a right back as well as a midfielder. The 25-year-old is also an American international and Gerrard would now hope that the duo accepts the deal soon after impressing him in trials.
