Latest reports from the Scottish Sun suggests that Rangers are eyeing a reunion with their former midfielder Lewis Macleod in January. The Brentford star is currently in the final year of his contract at Griffin Park, and it is expected that the 24-year-old would move by next summer. However, the Bears are set to face fierce competition for him as Championship high flyers Leeds United are also said to be interested in his signature.
The midfielder is a proclaimed Rangers fan and was at the club during the years 2004-2015. He came up from the Gers academy and his disappointment was there for everyone to see when he was sold. He was quoted as saying in 2015 (The Daily Mail),”When you’re a Rangers fan, it’s hard to let go and I’ve never experienced anything else in football up to now.
“I’d love to go back to Rangers later in my career. The most disappointing thing about leaving is the way I went. I’ve been injured so I wasn’t able to play my last game knowing that would be the case and say goodbye to the fans.”
MacLeod endured some tough years in England with injuries, but now he has firmly established himself as a regular for Brentford. He has managed three goals and two assists from midfield this season. His versatility to play anywhere across the middle of the park should come in handy for the Bears, and he could be that creative spark which Gerrard is currently looking for at the moment.
It is likely that the player might be willing to jump ship to join his boyhood club but the prospect of potentially moving to the Premier League with Leeds United should excite him. Let us also not forget that would get to play for a manager like Marcelo Bielsa who can take his game to another level. So if you ask for our honest opinion, the midfielder should probably choose Leeds United over Rangers from his career’s point of view.
However, we also know that playing for a club you have supported since your childhood could be tough to ignore so Macleod can find himself in a dilemma if both Rangers and Leeds United make an official approach for him.
The fact that he is in the final year of his contract also means that he could be available on a cut-price deal. If Rangers want their man, then they should probably go all out to wrap up his signature soon. His versatility and attacking output can be a handy addition and we for sure believe he can add more to his tally of 16 goals and 15 assists which he managed in 76 appearances in his first stint with the Gers.
