Steven Gerrard is once again looking at the Merseyside to bring in a new signing but this time from the other side of the Stanley Park as they are lining up a bid for Everton midfielder Kieran Dowell as per the Daily Record. The attacking midfielder has found it hard to get into the playing eleven at Goodison and has played just two games this season for the Toffees. The England u-21 international had spent the last season on loan with Nottingham Forest where he impressed as he racked up ten goals and five assists in all competitions.
Rangers being linked to an attacking midfielder shouldn’t come as a surprise as not too long ago Gerrard had said that he would look to add a no. 10 in January.
He had said (The Scottish Sun),” We have those players(Creative players) here but what we haven’t got is a natural No10, someone who is described as No10 and that’s his job. So maybe in the future that might be an area we might look at.”
A long-term injury to Graham Dorrans also hasn’t helped Gerrard’s cause as he is someone who could have thrived in that role and it seems like the manager isn’t going to wait for his midfielder to get fit.
The Gers have faced criticism sometimes for their lack of creativity, but the fact of the matter is that they are currently the highest scoring team in the Premiership by a margin of 7 goals. However, the likes of Scott Arfield and Ovie Ejaria, who have filled in the attacking midfield role, are much more suited to play in central midfield so going in for someone like Dowell makes sense.
Not too long ago Dowell was part of England’s u-21 team which player against Scotland u-21 at Tynecastle and Gerrard and Gary McAllister were present in attendance to watch that game. The midfielder has been impressive at the u-21 level for the Three Lions along with another one of reported( The Sun) Rangers target Dominic Solanke.
Gerrard and the club owners are not leaving any stones unturned as they try to end Celtic’s domination in the Premiership. The Bears currently lead the table but have played a game more over their arch-rivals Celtic. However, the title race definitely seems to be on especially when the Gers went past Hearts away from home.
Dowell has all the elements an attacking midfielder needs as he is calm and composed on the ball and can carve open defences with killer final balls. Given the quality which the Toffees have currently, the youngster is going to find it hard to break into the starting lineup. In such a scenario there could be a possibility that the Light Blues can land him in January if the player decides to move in search of greener pastures.
