According to a recent report by the Daily Mirror, Liverpool are lining up a £15m offer to secure the services of Pascal Gross from Brighton and Hove Albion when the transfer window reopens in January. The same report has also claimed that the Reds manager Jurgen Klopp is a big admirer of the German talent and wants to bring him to Anfield during the winter transfer period.
Gross’ Career In A Nutshell
The Mannheim born midfielder began his career in Germany and played for the youth team of VfL Neckarau Jugend before sealing a move to Hoffenheim. He worked his way up the youth ranks before featuring for the club’s second team. Gross was given a chance to gain more first-team opportunities by Karlsruher SC in the third tier of German football.
His incredible performances on the pitch earned him a move to FC Ingolstadt 04 in the summer of 2012 where he made a name for himself for scoring and setting up goals from midfield.
The Seagulls decided to take a chance on him and bring him to English football last year. Gross had made a mediocre start to this Premier League campaign but was a real revelation for Chris Hughton’s side last season when he scored seven goals and grabbed eight assists in 39 appearances across all competitions. However, his numbers have fallen this term considerably as he has registered just one goal in 8 league matches so far.
What Does The German Offer On The Pitch?
The German talent is a good dribbler with the ball and has a fantastic passing range. He can make passes with accuracy and has a knack for unlocking defences with his through balls. However, his defensive work-rate is questionable while he also lacks the quickness to beat the opposition defenders.
The Right Fit For The Reds?
The addition of Gross would undoubtedly bolster Jurgen Klopp’s midfield options at Anfield. One could argue that the Reds midfield currently lacks creativity and invention which makes the German prospect a perfect fit for Klopp’s team. Gross could be the missing piece in the Anfield jigsaw who can come in and help them push for the Premier League title.
At £15m, it seems like a bargain for a club like Liverpool, but there are still some concerns regarding Gross’s below-par performances this season. However, the pros outweigh the cons so the Merseyside giants should consider luring him to Anfield in January.
