Rangers might have made 15 signings in the summer, but there are still certain areas of the club that needs improvement. One of that position could be a left back as Jon Flanagan has been found wanting in the absence of Borna Barisic.
To be fair to the former Liverpool fullback, he is naturally a right-back and is currently playing out of position. Flanagan is probably better suited to be a backup option to James Tavernier at right back and given that he is naturally right-footed, he often struggles to deliver a cross down the left flank.
Therefore going in for a left back in January could make sense especially given Barisic’s injury record. One of the players whom the Gers can go after is Watford’s Marvin Zeegelaar who is yet to make an appearance in any competition for the Hornets this season.
Javi Gracia had already cast doubts about Zeegelaar’s involvement this season as in the summer he said (Independent Ireland),”We’ll see in the next few days what will happen with Marvin and Kaboul because in this moment, we have other players in the same position. At left back, we’ve got Adam Masina, Jose Holebas and in the next few days, we’ll decide what will happen with these players and Marvin is one of them.”
Nothing came about in the summer, and the Dutch left-back stayed put at Vicarage Road. With Holebas and Masina around, there seems to be no way that the 28-year-old would find game time this season and the Hornets shouldn’t mind letting the Dutch defender leave in the winter transfer period.
The fullback should also push for a move away given that he has been almost frozen out from the squad and Rangers should look to pounce to bolster their left-back option in January. Zeegelaar joined Watford last season only, but it seems clear that he is surplus to requirements. It appears that Gracia doesn’t rate him much as he went on to sign Adam Masina in the summer even though he had two players in the left back position already.
The 28-year-old is known for his attacking outlet and can even play in advanced positions as a left midfielder or a winger as well. Managers in modern day want their fullback to contribute more on the offensive front, and someone like Zeegelaar can do a top job while going forward.
His pace and physicality will make him a big hit in the Scottish Premiership. The former Sporting CP player could be a significant addition for the Gers if they manage to lure him.
