Everton might be on the 10th spot at the moment in the Premier League, but they have shown moments of promise and Marco Silva has brought enough optimism among the club’s fan base that they can challenge for the top 6 spots by a season or two. One of the most crucial players for the Toffees this season has been Andre Gomes who is on loan from Barcelona and Everton’s Director of Football Marcel Brands once again indicated (Liverpool Echo) that they would like to sign him on a permanent basis after his loan spell expires.
However, he admitted that things aren’t entirely in their hands and it is very likely going to come down to the player himself. Brands was quoted as saying (Liverpool Echo),”It is more depending on the player(Permanent deal). After the January [transfer window], we will talk, first, with the player and the key is with him.”
”If he likes to stay at Everton, which is what I hope, then that helps us a lot so it is important that we do everything to make him feel comfortable so that he is happy to stay here – and then I will try to do my job.”
We think the Everton fans would also have to play a significant role in this as their love and passion for the midfielder can persuade him further. The Portuguese international is currently at the peak of his career as he is 25 and has shown enough signs that he can handle himself in the Premier League. Often players coming from La Liga find it tough initially, but Gomes has settled in well at the club up until now.
However, there is no doubt that Barcelona are the bigger prospect in world football and the player might want to have another go in the Blaugrana lineup after his loan spell with Everton. Gomes was at the top of his game at Valencia and Barcelona went on to sign him for a hefty fee of $54.99m.
With Andres Iniesta and Xavi at the final stages of their career, the Portuguese was expected to succeed them in midfield, but Gomes hasn’t even come close to doing that. His slightly conservative style of play didn’t suit Barcelona standards, and he soon started struggling for confidence.
At Everton, he has a more creative partner in the form of Gylfi Sigurdsson to help him, and Idrissa Gueye manages to do the nitty gritty job in midfield. Gomes’ technical abilities on the ball allow him to thrive and this midfield trio can work wonders if they stay on together. Only time is going to say whether the 25-year-old would continue at Goodison Park after his loan spell. However, the intent from Everton is definitely there to get a permanent deal for him.
