Latest reports from the club website confirm that QPR defender Angel Rangel has signed a new deal with Steve McLaren’s side once again. The veteran fullback was linked (Nottingham Post) with a move away from the club in January as his contract was set to expire and Norwich City were one of the interested parties.
Rangel signed a short-term deal in August, given he was already 35, but now it seems like he has won over his manager as he has been a regular in the right back position for his side making 18 appearances thus far.
Apart from Norwich City, Nottingham Forest were also said to be interested in him along with some MLS clubs as well. The right-back joined Swansea City in 2007 and spent 11 years with the Welsh outfit. He was part of the side which won promotion to the English top flight, and he firmly established himself as one of the fan favourites at the club.
Former England manager Steve McLaren believes that the defender has so far been the signing of the season for him. The player also had similar views and even before he signed a new contract, he was quoted as saying, ”I’ve had interest from other clubs but I have to be thankful and grateful for the team that they gave that opportunity so I don’t think it would be the right move to move to another club and leave QPR behind.”
As for Norwich City, the Canaries have been flying high this season and we believe they have plenty of cover in the right-back spot and thus shouldn’t be too disappointed with this latest development. Daniel Farke currently has teen sensation Max Aarons who has established himself as the first choice this season. The youngster has been impeccable in his performances and the team has certainly benefitted from that as they sit on the top of the table.
Even if Aarons gets injured or suspended, Farke can call on the services of Borussia Dortmund’s right back Felix Passlack who is currently on loan at Carrow Road. Apart from that, the manager also has Ivo Pinto in his squad who can play in that position. Therefore it probably made no sense for the Canaries to go in for a fourth right back in January.
The way Rangel has been performing, he could have been a decent addition given his experience of English football but with City already doing well and having a fair number of options, the Spaniard committing his future with QPR isn’t a big blow for the Canaries.
