Chelsea have announced on their official website that their Spanish defender Cesar Azpilicueta has put pen to paper on a new long-term deal with the club. The Pensioners have also revealed that he has signed a fresh contract which would keep him at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2022.
In an interview with the club’s website, the Spaniard expressed his delight after committing his long-term future and said, ‘I am really happy to extend my stay here at Chelsea. Since I came, I felt the joy and responsibility to play for this club, these fans, and every time I go on the pitch I try do my best. Hopefully there is a lot to come and we can keep Chelsea where it belongs.’
Azpilicueta’s Glorious Career In A Nutshell
Azpilicueta came through the youth ranks of Osasuna before graduating from their academy and sealing a move to Marseille in the summer of 2010. His excellent performance in the Ligue 1 earned him a high-profile switch to Chelsea back in 2012.
Since his move to West London, the Spanish full-back has been a loyal soldier for the club and has made some telling contributions on the pitch which saw him win the Premier League twice and also earn an FA Cup and UEFA Europa League winners’ medal.
Why It Was An Easy Decision For Chelsea To Retain His Services?
At 29, the Spanish talent is currently playing his best football under Maurizio Sarri and has managed to establish himself as a first-choice right-back at Stamford Bridge this season. He can be considered as one of the best defenders in English football, so it was a no-brainer for Chelsea to offer him an improved, long-term contract.
Azpilicueta can now focus on playing well on the pitch as Chelsea looks to compete on all fronts going into the busy Christmas period. The 29-year-old has made 18 appearances for the Blues of London this term and has three assists to his name across multiple competitions.
A Massive Boost For Sarri?
This recent news would be a massive boost for Sarri as he looks to deliver some success in his first season in charge of the Pensioners. Azpilicueta is amongst the most reliable options that the Italian head coach has at his disposal in West London, and his long-term commitment would be crucial if Chelsea are to push on and become the kings of England once again in a few years’ time.
