Latest reports from the Daily Mail suggests that Celtic made enquiries about Everton midfielder Tom Davies who has struggled to get game time under Marco Silva. Reports add that Lee Congerton, Celtic’s Director of Football was keen on the midfielder who has come up from the Toffees’ academy. Engish club West Ham United are also said to be interested.
However, Marco Silva has assured Davies that his long-term future lies at Everton but to us, it feels that he would continue to struggle for game time at the moment. The signing of Andre Gomes from Barcelona and the consistency and form of Idrissa Gueye makes it very hard for Davies to break into the central midfield position. The Toffees have been bright under Marco Silva, and the midfield of Gomes, Gueye and Gylfi Sigurdsson have looked extremely potent.
Celtic missed out (Daily Record) on John McGinn in the summer and with Scott Brown’s future still uncertain and him being on the wrong side of the thirties, it makes sense for Rodgers to go after a midfielder. Callum McGregor has attracted interest (The Scottish Sun) from Premier League club Bournemouth so the Hoops can be in for a nervy time in January regarding the future of some of their players.
On the point of Davies leaving in January Silva said,”No way. Impossible. No way. Tom is part of our squad. He is an important player for me and an important player for us as a club. He is the present and the future of our club.”
Davies can be a real long-term option for Rodgers, but we highly doubt that the Silva would let him leave permanently. The 20-year-old is considered a big talent in the Merseyside and the fact that he came up from the academy, makes him one of the favourites among the fans as well. The midfielder is currently an England u-21 international and has the potential to be a senior player for them in the future.
The midfielder’s last appearance was in the game against Leicester City in the early part of October, and since then he hasn’t played a single minute of football as Gomes has established himself firmly in the first eleven. Davies is considered as the future of Everton, and he even captained the side against Arsenal in September.
As for a permanent move, there seems to be no chance that Everton will let that happen so Celtic can probably try their luck on a loan deal. However, with the busy part of the season set to come, Davies would definitely find game time and Silva’s words kind of indicates that he might not even sanction a loan move. Rodgers can chance his arm, but he should probably look at someone else for a permanent long-term midfield option.
