Kilmarnock winger and longtime Rangers target Jordan Jones is set to be in demand as he is edging towards the end of his contract. According to a report from the Sunday People (09/12; page 52) Premier League outfit Burnley are set to join the race for Jones’ signature. It is believed that the Clarets are eyeing a £1m move in January for the winger as the 24-year-old would then be in the last six months of his deal with Killie.
This should come as a massive blow for the Gers who have been eyeing a move for the winger for quite some time now. Rangers had a bid turned down (The Scottish Sun) in January this year for Jones, and now with Burnley entering the frame, it seems like Steven Gerrard would find it hard to get Jones.
Not too long ago, it was being reported by Bill Young of Rocksport Radio that Jones would move to Ibrox somewhere in the future. But now Rangers seem to be losing the grip on their man.
Jones is one of the brightest stars in the Killie lineup, and he has played a significant role so far this season when Kilmarnock held the top spot before their defeat to Celtic. The left winger has often been Steve Clarke’s go-to man in the final third, and he has often come up with the goods when required.
Rangers does have decent cover in the left winger’s position for the time being as they have the likes of Ryan Kent and Glenn Middleton. However, Kent would in all probability return to Liverpool after his loan spell expires at the end of the season. Jamie Murphy, who is out with an injury, will also claim the position once he becomes fit by next season.
Therefore we believe losing out on him doesn’t feel like a big blow at the moment for the Bears. Jones is yet to score this season for his side, but he remains a crucial player for them. He is a tricky winger, and we believe he can even be tried in the attacking midfield role because of his ability to pick out the right pass. Maybe Steven Gerrard is looking at him as a no.10 which the club feels is a priority at the moment for the January transfer window.
Given that a Premier League club is showing an interest in him, maybe the Gers might think they are missing on a big talent, and at the moment, the price of £1m looks within the range of Steven Gerrard. It remains to be seen how keen the Bears would be for the signature of this Northern Ireland winger when the winter transfer window arrives. Our opinion is that Gerrard should absolutely go all out for Jones given Kent’s impending return to Liverpool at the end of the season.
