Tottenham Hotspur have made a solid start to their Premier League campaign despite not playing their best football at times this season. Mauricio Pochettino has been able to build a squad capable of challenging for major silverware this season. However, the North London giants need to recruit well in the winter transfer window if they are to claim a top 4 finish at the end of this campaign.
Spurs are currently occupying the 3rd spot on the league table, just five points behind the league leaders Manchester City and are considered as one of the dark horses for the Premier League title. With Mousa Dembele currently playing in the twilight years of his career and Christian Eriksen’s long-term future in doubt, Pochettino needs to bring in a fresh face in midfield when the transfer window reopens in January.
Here are three midfielders Spurs should look to recruit next month.
Saúl Ñíguez
The Atletico Madrid midfield enforcer has been in fine form in the La Liga and has already put in a few outstanding performances at the Spanish capital so far this season. At 24, the Spanish talent is set to embark upon his peak years which Pochettino’s team could look to benefit from in the near future. He is a good playmaker in midfield and Spurs might finally challenge for significant silverware if a player of Niguez’s quality joins their ranks.
Piotr Zielinski
The Polish international has been impressive for Napoli this season and has also managed to establish himself as one of the best midfielders in the Serie A. He is very quick and can make darting runs with the ball into the opposition penalty area which makes him a dangerous threat from midfield. Zielinski has a knack for scoring and setting up goals if given the freedom to express himself so Spurs should consider signing him in January.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic
The Serbian midfielder has been an integral member of the Lazio team which has performed so well over the past few years. This uptick in the Serie A side’s form has coincided with his arrival from Genk in the summer of 2015.
He had put in some impressive displays for the Italian outfit last season, but his form has dipped somewhat this term. With better players around him at North London, he could find his goal-scoring touch once again but only if Pochettino is willing to take a chance on him.
