Liverpool have emerged as one of the prime contenders to lift the Premier League silverware this term knocking down mighty Manchester City off their perch. Their significant summer business lifted the spirit in Merseyside and Jurgen Klopp, the Reds boss, now holds a squad capable enough to chase glory.
Meanwhile, an array of promising youngsters have been loaned out elsewhere to gain experience at a senior level, and Welshman Harry Wilson has been standout so far among all of them. His incredible spell at Hull City last season saw a dozen Championship sides showing their interest to acquire the youngster. However, Frank Lampard’s Derby County had the last laugh who successfully tied Wilson down on a season-long loan.
Despite a slow start in Derbyshire, the Liverpool loanee has picked up momentum in recent weeks, and a change of position seemed to have worked out perfectly for the 21-year-old attacker. Predominantly a right winger, Wilson was also tried out on the opposite flank but struggled to make an impact in the attacking third. Although a spectacular free-kick goal against Manchester United at Old Trafford in their EFL Cup triumph earned him acknowledgements, the Wales international has found his rhythm back since being deployed in a more central role behind the frontline.
He is now featuring down the right-hand side of Derby’s midfield three occupying a free role and the space in front is allowing him to have free runs and complete dribbles exhibiting his usual playing style. Wilson is now back among goals once again, and the transformation should hand Klopp a significant boost next season to promote him as Adam Lallana’s successor.
Lallana, 30, has slipped down the pecking order following a series of injury woes and the clock is ticking for the decorated Englishman to re-establish his reputation. Wilson, on the other hand, will inject energy, versatility and much more creativity while orchestrating moves from behind. Moreover, his stunning set-piece skill reminds of Philippe Coutinho, and the overall impact of the academy prodigy will be huge if allowed enough senior minutes before settling down. There is plenty of time left this season, and the player must keep up the excellent work to pursue Derby’s promotion dreams.
Klopp, nevertheless, should keep close tabs on his progress and nurture the prized asset once he returns to his boyhood club upon the completion of the ongoing campaign. Wilson deserves opportunities in Liverpool colours and his growth under Lampard will be assessed in upcoming fixtures.
