Manchester City entertained Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday evening hoping to secure all three points from this derby. The Citizens looked dangerous at the early moments of the match and made the breakthrough in the 12th minute courtesy of David Silva’s goal from close range. United looked to do some damage on the counter but were not able to get a foothold in the game.
The second half was more of the same with City piling on the pressure as the Red Devils looked to stay in the contest. It took Pep Guardiola’s men just two minutes to score again in the second half when Sergio Aguero scored with an emphatic finish. United came back and got a lifeline when Anthony Martial converted a spot-kick. However, it wasn’t to be as City scored again through IIkay Gündogan’s easy finish to secure maximum points from the derby.
Let’s take a look at how each Manchester City player performed during the match against the Red Devils.
GK: Ederson – 6/10
The Brazilian was guilty of giving away the penalty which made the match a little nervy for City. However, he was outstanding with his distribution of the ball and had an easy outing as the United attackers failed to test him often enough.
RB: Kyle Walker – 7/10
The English right-back worked his socks off down the right flank and did well to see out a victory for the Citizens.
CB: John Stones – 8/10
It was a comfortable day out for the English international. He dealt with Romelu Lukaku’s physicality well in the second half.
CB: Aymeric Laporte – 8/10
Another impressive display from the City centre-back. He looked calm in defence and did the little things right during the game.
LB: Benjamin Mendy – 7/10
The French talent was a wonderful outlet down the left flank and delivered some dangerous balls into the Red Devils box.
CM: Bernardo Silva – 9/10
The Portuguese speedster was City’s biggest threat going forward. He made some brilliant runs behind the United backline and got credited with two assists on the day.
CM: Fernandinho – 5.5/10
The Brazilian had a poor game in the first half when he gave away the ball quite a few times and made some needless challenges. But, he came back strong in the second half and did enough defensively to restrict Mourinho’s men from scoring more than one goal.
CM: David Silva – 9/10
The Spaniard pulled strings from midfield and was there at the right place when the ball fell in his path for a smooth finish. He hardly gave away the ball and ran the show in the United half.
RM: Riyad Mahrez – 5.5/10
An unusually quiet game from the Algerian international! He was not able to leave his mark in the contest.
ST: Sergio Agüero – 8/10
The Argentine forward looked a significant goal threat throughout the game and scored with a powerful strike from a tight angle.
LM: Raheem Sterling – 8.5/10
His pace caused a lot of problems for Ashley Young in the first half. Sterling looked dangerous and was at the heart of almost every City counter-attack during the game.
Substitutes:
CM: IIkay Gündogan – 8/10
The German came off the bench to score and wrap up all three points for the Citizens.
LM: Leroy Sane – 7/10
The German winger looked a real threat after being subbed in to replace Mahrez.
CM: Phil Foden -N/A
No time to make an impact.
