Lewis Macleod was one of the brightest talents to come out of Rangers academy, and he made a name for himself by becoming a regular at the club. However, the club decided to cash in on him in 2015 and sold him to Championship outfit Brentford. He endured a few tough years in England because of injuries, but now he is slowly back at his best and has established himself as an important player for the Bees. However, the latest reports from the Scottish Sun confirms that the Gers are interested in making a move for him in the future.
The versatile midfielder is currently in the final year of his contract and has rejected a new deal at Brentford which has fired up the rumour mill further. English outfit Leeds United are also said to be monitoring his situation, but if the Gers show an interest in having him, we believe they can land their former academy product without much persuasion.
In 2015 Macleod had commented about his departure from Ibrox, and it was clear that he was disheartened when he was shipped away from his boyhood club. The 24-year-old who had joined the Gers academy in 2004 was quoted as saying,”When you’re a Rangers fan, it’s hard to let go and I’ve never experienced anything else in football up to now. I’d love to go back to Rangers later in my career. The most disappointing thing about leaving is the way I went. I’ve been injured so I wasn’t able to play my last game knowing that would be the case and say goodbye to the fans.”
The 24-year-old has racked up two goals and two assists in 13 Championship matches this season and he has usually played as a central midfielder. That is one of the areas where the Gers have plenty of cover, so going after him in the short run doesn’t make sense. However, the fact that he could be available for free next summer should interest Rangers and other suitors as well.
Macleod can play in almost all the positions across the midfield and a versatile player like him can be a handy addition to the squad. Steven Gerrard has expressed a desire to sign on loan midfielders like Lassana Coulibaly and Ovie Ejaria permanently but their good performance should also keep their parent clubs interested and there is no guarantee right now that Gerrard would be able to get his hands on those two midfielders who have played a crucial part so far this season.
If Macleod bides his time until next summer to see out his contract, the Bears should be in a good position to land him if they are keen on him. However, Leeds United might look to do a deal in January for the midfielder so if the Gers really want him; they cannot wait until the summer to land him.
