According to the latest reports, Rangers are looking to bring their former midfielder Steven Davis back at Ibrox in January. It is believed that the Gers will look to sign him on loan first intending to make the move permanent in the future. This is not the first time that the Bears have been linked with him as even in the summer window rumours were doing the round that the club could once again look to reunite with their former player.
This has been a season of reunions for Rangers as they have already signed the likes of Allan McGregor and Kyle Lafferty and it looks likely now that Steven Davis of Southampton could be added to that list. Davis who is 33 now is finding it tough to get game time under manager Mark Hughes, and the veteran midfielder has made just one Premier League appearance so far this season.
The Northern Ireland captain left Rangers in 2012 to pursue a more lucrative footballing stint at Southampton and over the years, he has played a big role in making the Saints a steady top-flight club. Davis has never closed down doors before to joining the Gers again as not too long ago a Rangers fan asked him whether he would be back in Glasgow to which he replied,”Hopefully one day, hopefully.”
Davis had an illustrious career with the Bears as in 4 seasons; he was part of the squad which won three league titles, two Scottish Cups and three League Cups. Along with that, he was also part of the team which reached the 2008 UEFA Cup finals.
The Gers have plenty of options in midfield so one might feel that central midfield is not one of the areas where the club needs reinforcements. However, an experienced man like him who has a record of winning titles would seriously help the squad. Players like Lassana Coulibaly and Ovie Ejaria are just on loan so there is no guarantee that Gerrard would be able to sign those midfielders on a permanent basis.
Davis might not play week in week out but he can bring the squad together, and a move like this would also go well with the fans. Plus even until last season, Davis was a regular and club captain for the Saints so he should still have few years of football left in him.
Gerrard has already mentioned that he won’t hesitate to sign new players if the current players aren’t able to deliver and we might once again see some additions to be made in the January window and for now, Davis definitely seems on that list after the recent reports.
