According to the latest reports, Rangers are after former Chelsea midfielder Harvey St Clair who currently plies his trade for Serie B outfit Venezia. The 20-year-old midfielder caught the eye of Gerrard in the Toulon tournament in the summer while he was representing the Scotland u-21 side. The 20-year-old is an attacking midfielder who can also play down the left wing and not too long ago Gerrard confirmed that they could be in for a no. 10 in the future. However, reports are suggesting that the Gers are likely to go after him next summer as they carry on tracking him for the time being.
Someone like Clair fits the bill for the Gers. The player also went on to reveal how Rangers’ current coach Michael Beale had an impact on him and it was Beale who advised the player to leave Chelsea and join the Italian outfit in the summer. Beale had worked with St Clair at the youth level at Chelsea, and later Beale moved on to Liverpool, coaching and working with their youth squad. Not too long ago, Gerrard was the u-18 manager of the Liverpool team, and he brought Beale at the Ibrox with himself.
Therefore the Light Blues might have the edge over signing this 20-year-old midfielder, but it remains to be seen whether the Italian outfit would be willing to sell the midfielder after signing him just this summer. Clair recently explained the role which Beale played in his decision to move to Italy.
He said,”I wanted advice about the playing side of the game, so I went to Michael Beale. What he said about the benefits of taking up the opportunity to experience another style of football and a new way of life really appealed to me.”
Often young players who start off at big clubs fail to make it big and it was probably the right decision for the midfielder cum winger to move to a different country for new experiences. At Stamford Bridge, he would have continued playing with the reserve, and youth squad for Chelsea or likely would have been sent on loan to Vitesse Arnhem (where most of the Chelsea loan army go).
As a Scotsman, he would probably love to play in his homeland for one of the biggest clubs in the country. St Clair’s versatility to play as a winger and an attacking midfielder is definitely going to come in handy for Gerrard if he decides to make a move on him.
So far he has managed two goals in 6 appearances this season, and the experience of playing in Italy would help in his overall development. With Beale in Gerrard’s corner, the Bears holds all the aces for landing him in the future.
