Rangers might have gone over the line against St. Mirren, but the performance was still lacking and left a lot to be desired. Daniel Candeias’ late goal can be termed as more luck than skill as he was most likely looking to cross the ball and Morelos only added the second when St. Mirren were deflated in the dying minutes. The game could have again easily stretched to a 0-0 scoreline, and one could only imagine what the reaction of the manager and fans would have been if they failed to beat the league strugglers.
That’s four games in a row now that one can say the performance of the club has not been up to the mark especially in the final third. Recently Gerrard made it clear that he wouldn’t hesitate to go back in the transfer market to sign players if the current crop of players cannot deliver and he specifically talked about the lack of quality in the final third. Now Gerrard’s right-hand man Gary McAllister talked about in similar lines. He said,’’ We have people in recruitment always looking, when the transfer window opens we have to be in the market to improve our squad.’’
So it seems clear now that even after 15 signings, Gerrard is still slightly unhappy with the quality at his disposal and we feel he might look at these two positions to add more firepower and reinforcements in the January window.
An attacking and creative midfielder
The club is loaded with midfielders at the moment, but none of them has that guile and cleverness to unlock the defence. Almost all of them are used to do the workhorse kind of role by keeping things moving in midfield, but one hasn’t seen someone carving open the defence in the final third with a decisive pass.
A creative player would definitely cost a good amount of money but the club needs to find a solution as currently, Rangers are too heavily dependent on attacking from the wide areas. The opponents have slowly found out how to defend against them and they seemingly know that they don’t have it in them to break open defence from the middle.
A striker
The team is too heavily dependent on Alfredo Morelos to produce the goods in every game. Plus the Colombian has a history of disciplinary issues and in almost every game picks up a yellow card. Therefore a suspension is never too far off when he is in the starting eleven.
Kyle Lafferty is a decent option to have from the bench as he adds a bit of physical presence when he comes on but the club could do with another forward as someone like Umar Sadiq has failed to produce the good big time.
