According to a recent report by the Metro, Manchester United are ready to trigger a 12-month extension option in Phil Jones’ current contract but would be open to offers from other teams when the transfer window reopens in January. It is understood that the United centre-back’s current deal is set to run out at the end of this campaign, but the Red Devils does have the option to extend his stay for another year.
Recent Times Have Been Frustrating
The 26-year-old has been plagued with injuries in recent times which has derailed his career at Old Trafford. He is not a part of Jose Mourinho’s starting XI and has lost his place to Victor Lindelof, Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly, who are all ahead of him in Mourinho’s pecking order.
Jones’ Successful Career With The Red Devils
Since his £17m switch from Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 2012, the English defender has gone on to make 194 appearances for the Red Devils and has five goals and nine assists to his name across multiple competitions. He has managed to win the Premier League, UEFA Europa League and the FA Cup during his time at Old Trafford which goes on to show how great his career has been at the red half of Manchester.
What Makes Jones A Worthy Asset?
Jones is vastly experienced at the highest level and knows what it takes to win. The English centre-back is an excellent tackler of the ball which helps him make timely interceptions for his team under high-pressure situations. There is no hiding from the fact that his form in recent months has dipped a lot, but that doesn’t make him a poor option for Mourinho to retain.
Should Man United Sell Him In January?
Jones can be a perfect squad player as he offers a lot of quality on the field which is why the Reds of Manchester should look to retain his services for now. It will be a mistake to let a player of Jones’ talents and quality leave without bringing in a suitable replacement capable of filling up his shoes at Old Trafford.
Mourinho has a lot of crucial decisions to make during the winter transfer period, and one of them will surely be regarding the long-term future of the English defender.
