According to a recent report by the Sun, Manchester City are plotting a £5m move for Columbus Crew goalkeeper Zack Steffen. It is understood that the Citizens have identified the United States shot-stopper to play as a back-up to Ederson. Pep Guardiola is still looking to fill the void left by Claudio Bravo’s severe injury and is ready to table a £5m bid in an attempt to lure Steffen to the Etihad Stadium.
The 23-year-old has already put in a string of eye-catching displays for Columbus this season which has not gone unnoticed by the Man City chiefs. The MLS goalie has made 32 appearances for the Ohio-based club, conceding 42 goals while keeping 11 clean sheets across all competitions.
The Rise Of Zack Steffen
Steffen grew up playing as a keeper in the United States before sealing a move to play for SC Freiburg II in the Bundesliga 2. However, he was not able to prove his worth in Germany and had to make a return back to his homeland to play for Columbus Crew back in 2016.
However, his time at the MAPFRE Stadium turned out to be a resounding success which helped him earn six international caps for the United States national team so far.
What Will Steffen Bring To The Etihad Stadium?
The 23-year-old has sharp reflexes which helps him pull off some fantastic saves in goal for Columbus. He is also very good with his positioning and can distribute the ball well from the back. However, he lacks the quickness to operate as a ‘sweeper keeper’ which Guardiola needs to be aware of if he manages to land the USA prospect next summer.
Will He Be A Worthy Back-Up To Ederson?
The potential acquisition of Steffen could prove to be a shrewd move by the Citizens as he will be available on the cheap and would be a significant upgrade over Arijanet Muric due to his experience of playing in both United States and Germany. Moreover, it will be a low-risk addition as Ederson would be expected to line up in goal in almost every match for the Blues of Manchester barring any injuries or suspensions.
Hence, it makes sense for City to sign the MLS sensation as he would be a competent back-up to Ederson.
