According to the latest reports, Leeds United are once again going to try their luck in landing Aston Villa winger Albert Adomah in the January transfer window. The Whites were strongly linked with him in the last few days of the summer window, but the move didn’t go through, and the Ghanaian winger stayed put at Villa Park. United’s major rivals Middlesbrough are also said to be in the mix for the winger.
United had identified three positions where they wanted to add more firepower to their squad, and a winger was also on that list. Someone like Adomah fits the bill perfectly as he has ample amount of experience in the Championship and can have an instant impact in the first eleven.
However, being predominantly a right winger, the 30-year-old might struggle to get into the team as Pablo Hernandez is a guaranteed starter under Bielsa. We must remember though that Adomah can play from the left flank as well and that is where he is likely to play more at Elland Road if the current table toppers land him in January.
Last season, the winger played a crucial role in Villa’s promotion push as he scored 14 goals and assisted five times. Under the new management of Dean Smith, he has started in three games from the four he has managed. Therefore, the winger looks like a crucial player in Smith’s setup.
However, Villa sits on the 14th spot at the moment, and a move to United might excite the player as the Whites are in with a good shout to move to the Premier League by next season. Adomah can be a good fit for Bielsa as he is a typical pacy winger, but his work rate and tracking back abilities are what sets him apart and the reason why we feel Bielsa could be keen on the experienced winger. However, the 30-year-old is yet to find his stride this season as he is still waiting for his first goal and so far has contributed with just one assist in 13 Championship appearances.
Middlesbrough were perilously close to signing him in the summer, and they are again going to be one of the top contenders for his signature. Therefore, United must step up their pursuit for his signature, and we believe playing under someone like Bielsa should attract the player more than Tony Pulis.
It is surprising to see that Villa were willing to let him go as he had enjoyed the best season of his career in the 2017-18 campaign and there were reports that the club wasn’t even looking to negotiate a new deal with the winger even though his contract runs out in 2020. So there is a real chance that he would be sold in the winter and United need to get him for his quality and also to make sure he doesn’t join their direct rivals.
