Tottenham Hotspur have made a solid start to their Premier League campaign after claiming 27 points in 12 matches. Spurs are currently sitting in the 4th place of the league standings and are still in with a chance to mount a realistic title challenge this season.
However, Mauricio Pochettino’s side have been struck with some injuries to their key personnel, most notably Jan Vertonghen, in recent weeks. Hence, the Tottenham boss opted to start with Juan Foyth in central defence alongside Toby Alderweireld for Saturday’s match away at Crystal Palace. The Argentine defensive ace grabbed his rare opportunity with both hands as he put in a commanding display at the back to help his team secure a crucial clean sheet at Selhurst Park.
The 20-year-old is an Estudiantes youth product who moved to North London in the summer of 2017. Despite his incredible potential, he has not been able to break into the Tottenham first-team in his first year at the club.
Foyth did his chances no harm when he managed to cope with the threat of Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend last night on his way to scoring the only goal of the game. His brilliant performance this weekend could see him feature more regularly for Spurs in the near future as Pochettino looks to find a way to cope with all the winter fixture congestion.
What Does The Argentine Centre-back Add To Pochettino’s Side?
The South-American wonderkid is a well-rounded central defender who knows how to play his way out from the back, and he is also a great defender in 1v1 situations as he is not beaten easily off the dribble.
The Tottenham starlet also has a great leap for a 6 ft 1-inch defender, but he needs to work on his core strength if he intends to improve and prove himself at the highest level, especially in the Premier League, which is known for its physicality and high intensity.
Should Foyth Get A Regular Starting Place In The Tottenham first-team?
The Argentine centre-half has already shown signs of his massive potential, but Spurs need to give him more game time if they want him to be a future star in European football. Unless Pochettino can find a way to get Foyth involved on a weekly basis, it might be better for his career to part ways with Spurs, either temporarily or on a permanent basis so that he can fulfil his real potential.
Our honest opinion is he is really good enough on a long-term basis to capture the starting berth in central defence. In the meantime, he needs to take every chance he gets due to the heavy rotation Poch would be forced to do in December-January.
