Reports are doing the round that Leeds United are after Brentford’s versatile midfielder Lewis Macleod who is in the final year of his contract and has rejected a new deal at the club. It is believed that the player wants to weigh his options first for the future before committing to a club and that had alerted the Whites who are monitoring his current situation. However, Scottish giants Rangers FC are also said to be in the mix, and we feel that if the Gers are keen on having him, United are likely to miss out on their target.
Macleod came up from the Rangers academy and was with the Glaswegian giants since 2004. In 2015 he was shipped to Brentford after the Gers decided to cash in on him and the player seemed clearly disappointed that he was moved away from his boyhood club. After being transferred, the 24-year-old had said,”When you’re a Rangers fan, it’s hard to let go and I’ve never experienced anything else in football up to now.”
”I’d love to go back to Rangers later in my career. The most disappointing thing about leaving is the way I went. I’ve been injured so I wasn’t able to play my last game knowing that would be the case and say goodbye to the fans. Whenever I’m back up in Glasgow, I’ll try to get along to a few of the games. But I’d love to return to play for the club at some point, too, however many years down the line that is.”- the former Scotland u-21 international added further.
It’s clear that Macleod is an out and out Rangers fan and he is likely to jump on the opportunity to play for his former club again. However, he should definitely consider a move to the West Yorkshire from his career’s point of view. Playing under someone like Marcelo Bielsa can open up new horizons for him and the way the Whites are going, they are definitely in the reckoning to qualify for the Premier League. Therefore it can very much happen that by next summer, Macleod can turn out for a Premier League outfit.
The Scotsman has played in central midfield so far this season for the Bees but he is capable of playing anywhere across the midfield, and one can say that his preferred position is of a left midfielder. We expect the Whites to use him in that position as they only have Ezgjan Alioski for that role.
United should look to make a move in January as it is expected that Rangers wouldn’t spend on a midfielder as they have plenty of options and they are likely to sign him for free next season. Therefore Bielsa should make a move soon if he is keen on adding this Brentford talent at Elland Road.
