Rangers might have scored seven goals against Motherwell, but it is clear that Steven Gerrard has been left frustrated by the performance of his players in the final third of late. The manager recently indicated that a no.10 is one of the positions on the list of the club for a future transfer move and we believe Wigan Athletic’s Nick Powell would be a perfect fit at Ibrox.
The former Manchester United playmaker has entered in the last year of his contract, and it was reported that the playmaker recently rejected a new deal at the club. However, the club is actively pursuing him to sign a new contract, and the new owners have made it a priority to keep hold of this 24-year-old.
Celtic have been linked with him even beyond the summer window, and Powell is also attracting some interest from the Premier League as well. A player like him can be a big hit at Ibrox, and we believe the Gers should try their luck in landing him. The owners have shown that they are willing to back Gerrard in the transfer market and we think he is the perfect no. 10 who is ‘kind of’ attainable for the Gers.
It’s true that Rangers won’t be the favourites to land him as some English top flight clubs have shown an interest in him but he can be assured of regular football and chance to play in the European competition in Glasgow. With this signing, Rangers won’t only be adding a no.10, but they would also be gaining a striker as well as Powell has shown that he can lead the line for his club.
The midfielder’s claim to fame happened when he moved to Old Trafford to join Manchester United when he was just 19. However, in four years at Manchester, the creative playmaker had loan spells at Leicester City, Hull City and Wigan Atheltic.
He found his footing at the DW Stadium and the Latics snapped him up on a permanent basis. Last season, one wouldn’t be wrong in claiming that Powell was one of the most crucial players in getting Wigan back to the Championship by winning the League One title.
What sets this former Manchester United midfielder apart is his intelligence in the final third. The 24-year old seems to know where to find the space to exploit the defence, and his link-up play is also worth mentioning. When it comes to leading the line, Powell is strong in the air and has an eye for goals and those abilities also suit him to fill in the forward’s role once in a while.
Recently reports have come out that German outfit RB Leipzig have also taken a liking for him. The competition to get him looks hard and Rangers might be second favourites to get him, but if the club wants to make a statement of intent, then Powell can be an attainable target, and the club should try their luck in January.
