Steven Gerrard recently made it clear that he could look for a natural no. 10 for the future in the transfer market. The manager has been visibly miffed with the performance of his players in the attacking third, but the Motherwell game came as a breath of fresh air as Rangers thrashed them 7-1. One of the major difference makers in that game was summer signing Eros Grezda who has missed a good part of the season so far due to injury. The Albanian got on the scoresheet twice, and we believe the manager should wait a bit before splashing millions in January.
Grezda is traditionally a winger but he has played in a more central role as well in his career. Signed from Croatian side NK Osijek, the 23-year-old is slowly finding his feet at Ibrox and Gerrard believes that the player has more to offer.
After the big win against Motherwell, Gerrard had said,”I’ve been waiting for this moment and Eros has been waiting for this moment. He had a really bad injury over the summer and he’s only really just coming out of his pre-season now. I’m really excited and confident that there’s more to come from him.”
Grezda has had decent goalscoring contribution throughout his career and that is what the Gers have been missing as apart from Morelos, nobody has taken up the burden of scoring goals regularly. That was one of the reasons why Gerrard had come down heavily on his players and even went on to claim that if the current crop of player can’t deliver in the final third, then he won’t hesitate at bringing in new players.
Rangers are just two points off from the top of the table and are still in a with a good shout to get out of their Europa League group even though many considered the group to be a tough one.
Grezda was signed late in the window almost as a replacement for Jamie Murphy who was out for the season after an injury he suffered while playing against Kilmarnock.
Gerrard recently admitted that his side lacks a natural no. 10 and we also feel the likes of Scott Arfield and Ovie Ejaria are more suited to play in a much deeper role. However, we believe Grezda can be given a go in the role of an attacking midfielder for the time being.
The likes of Daniel Candeias and Ryan Kent have been performing well so replacing them on the wings doesn’t make sense at the moment. With more game time, Grezda can gain confidence and maybe he could be the difference maker in the final third which the Gers have been searching for so far.
