Steven Gerrard’s appointment was met with a lot of positivism given the stature he had in world football, but there was a good section of the fans who were sceptical about his appointment given that the former Liverpool midfielder had almost no experience in management.
Yes, Gerrard worked with Liverpool’s u-18 team for a year, but it’s a different ball game when managing a senior side especially one are trying to regain its lost glory. However, we are almost four months into the season, and the Gers are two points off the top of the table and are still in with a decent shout to get out of their Europa League group, a competition where they failed to qualify last year by losing in the first round of qualifiers.
So the improvement is there for everyone to see and Gerrard was recently asked about his verdict on the job he has done so far to which the gaffer said,”“I’m quietly satisfied. We’re in a nice position but there’s lots of hard work ahead. The challenge hasn’t got any bigger or smaller than when I walked in.”
”I’m really enjoying because it’s about managing the individuals. If you get that right the team will be fine. The players have given me absolutely everything. Even the games we’ve lost hasn’t been through downing tools or not emptying everything for the club.”
Gerrard’s impact can be seen on the pitch as well as off it as he helped Rangers land some decent talents in the summer and helped bring Liverpool players on loan. One of the best qualities that he has brought in at the club is his honesty.
The manager hasn’t been shy about owning up to his mistake and has often called a spade a spade in front of the media. His interviews are something which every fan can connect to and the way he has brought transparency and accountability at the club should make the fans satisfied.
Celtic are probably still the favourites to sweep away all the domestic honours but the fans should also be quietly confident within themselves that they can turn things around this season. Losing out in the League Cup semi-final was a big blow as many considered that to be Rangers’ best chance for a silverware this season but maybe they can use that to their advantage after the international break as the Light Blues would have one less game to fight for.
We wouldn’t be wrong in saying that this is one of the most positive times at the club since the Bears went down to the second tier and Gerrard is a big reason behind that. Hopefully, a lot more positive things are to come from the Gers in the coming few months.
