Celtic have had a long list of injuries of late, but they would be glad that at least the injuries didn’t take too much toll on the performance on the pitch. They currently sit on top of the table and are also in the League Cup final. Along with that, a narrow 2-1 win against RB Leipzig has just about kept their hopes alive of getting out of the group from the Europa League.
However, the busy set of fixtures are set to continue, and the Hoops are going to play five games in 15 days right after the international break. The Celtic faithful would be glad about the latest piece of news as Leigh Griffiths has reportedly started training and would look to get to match fitness after suffering a knee injury.
After the sale of Moussa Dembele to Lyon, the Bhoys are thin in the attacking department, and they must be glad that Odsonne Edouard came out unscathed in the past month when Griffiths was out injured. With so many crucial games coming up thick and fast, Griffiths will have to hit the ground running with everything to play for after the international break.
Rodgers should utilise both his strikers smartly to share their burden, and it remains to be seen how quickly Griffiths can be back to his best after close to a month of injury layoff.
The 28-year-old Scotsman has had his naysayers in the past but the Scottish international has gone on to prove himself at Park Head, and one can say that he is one of the fan favorites at the club given the reception he gets every time he is on the pitch.
The striker recently went past the 100 goal mark this season for the Hoops, and he took less than 200 games to achieve that. Those are indeed some top numbers for a striker who has played second fiddle in the past two-three years.
What makes Griffiths stand out is his goal-scoring instincts and his ability to find space in the final third. The forward likes to play on the shoulder of the defenders and make some intelligent runs. Even though he is on the lighter side and not much of a threat to defenders physically, Griffiths is certainly a handful.
Edouard is likely to continue as the first choice striker in this upcoming busy period but Griffiths would definitely have an important role to play with League Cup final, Europa League qualifications and the domestic games which are on the line. This is a massive boost for Rodgers, and with the international break still going on, Griffiths can continue working on getting back to his best.
