Manchester United made the headlines for all the wrong reasons this weekend after being humbled with a 3-1 scoreline by their local rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. The Red Devils are in real danger of missing out on a top 4 finish this season unless Jose Mourinho manages to pull off a January overhaul of his squad and bring in some new players who could help them challenge in the second half of this campaign.
All signs point towards Mourinho slowly losing his dressing room especially after the Portuguese manager made a series of public rants about his players over the past couple of years. Maybe it is finally time for him to ship out some of the deadwood in his squad. The United boss could look to utilise the winter transfer period in a last-ditch effort to try and turn the club’s fortunes around for the better.
Here are three players Mourinho should consider selling in January as they can be deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.
Marcos Rojo
The Argentine defender has hardly featured for the Red Devils this season mainly because of his unfortunate luck with injuries. Rojo can be a capable defender on his day but his time at Old Trafford has often been plagued with spells on the sidelines.
So moving him on during the winter transfer period could be the best move for everyone involved as the player needs a fresh start away from the physicality and high intensity of Premier League football.
Jesse Lingard
Mourinho should consider parting ways with at least one of his under-performing attacking talents in order to fund a move for a worthy replacement. Hence, shipping Lingard out could be the way to go as his dire performances have not even come close to reaching the heights of last season. The English prospect might be a fan favourite but his run of poor displays for United cannot be overlooked.
Sergio Romero
The Argentine keeper has played second-fiddle to David De Gea for a long time, but he has come nowhere close to putting up a realistic challenge for a place in Mourinho’s starting XI. Hence, bringing in a new number two could be the way to go for Mourinho as De Gea needs more competition if he wants to continue performing at the top of his game over the next few years.
