Rangers are blowing hot one week and cold the other. In fact, even during a match their performances have been bipolar as there are occasions when they play like a world-class team and at other times, they make schoolboy errors. However, off late one thing that has been clear is they lack the quality to break down sides who defend in numbers as they are too dependent to attack from the wings. People might argue that the Gers scored three goals in Russia recently, but that was because Spartak Moscva needed the three points desperately and they played a very open game.
Winning league is about seeing out the lesser teams, and one tactic they usually deploy is to sit back and defend in numbers. The Gers have already lost quite a few points against teams playing like that, and for those games, Gerrard needs an attacking midfielder who can unlock defences with his guile and creativeness.
Rangers might have plenty of cover in the midfield area but most of the players are more suited to play in a more central role, and an attacking midfielder should be on the shopping list for the Light Blues in January. We look at three possible options they can go after.
Ben Woodburn
Gerrard can once again look back to Liverpool to land this young talent. The Welsh international is currently on loan to Sheffield United, but he has hardly found game time and the Blades allowed him to play for the Liverpool u-23 side to keep him match fit.
Therefore there is a good possibility that his loan spell could be cut short and Gerrard can land this talented forward. The 19-year-old can play anywhere across the final third, and he can be an effective player in the no. 10 role.
Lewis Macleod
The former Rangers player has already been linked with the Gers this season as he has reportedly rejected a new contract at Brentford and is in the final year of his deal with the English club. Macleod has played for the Bees as a central midfielder, but we think he can play in a more advanced role as well. The former academy graduate would also glad to be back at Ibrox.
Nick Powell
The former Manchester United midfielder was destined for big things at one point in his career but failed to make it big in his younger days. However, he has found his footing with Wigan Athletic and is one of the most effective playmakers in the Championship currently. The 24-year-old recently rejected a new contract with the Latics and Powell could be a real game changer if Gerrard manages to land him in January.
