According to recent reports, the newly appointed Fulham manager Claudio Ranieri is keen on making Liverpool defender Joel Matip his first signing during the winter transfer period. It is understood that the Cameroonian may seek for a move away from Merseyside in search of more game time on the pitch.
Matip’s Frustrating Start To This Campaign
Matip has made just one start for the Reds in the Premier League so far. It is safe to assume that he has fallen down the Anfield pecking order behind the likes of Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren. The Cameroonian international needs to orchestrate a move away from Liverpool so that he can reignite his career somewhere else by earning more first-team minutes.
The Merseyside giants have made a terrific start to this campaign defensively after conceding just five goals in 12 league matches. Not being a part of Klopp’s squad should disappoint him which makes it an ideal opportunity for the Cottagers to approach the player in January.
The 27-year-old arrived on a free transfer from Schalke and had gone on to make 74 appearances for Liverpool during his time at Anfield. He also has three goals to his name so far.
What Does The Cameroonian Add To Klopp’s Team?
Matip boasts incredible strength and is known for his aerial prowess. He can make timely interceptions and is a commanding presence inside his own penalty area. However, his distribution from the back has a lot of room for improvement which could be a reason why Klopp has opted to start with Gomez over him.
Should The Reds Let Him Leave?
The 27-year-old’s potential departure could leave a big hole in the Liverpool backline as they would lose one of their most reliable squad players.
The Reds should part ways with him soon if they are not able to provide him with regular game time on the pitch. It is only fair to the player to do so as he has always put his best foot forward when Klopp has called upon his services thus far.
