According to a recent report Calcio Mercato, Torino are preparing a move to re-sign their former star Davide Zappacosta from Chelsea. It is understood that the Italian outfit are hoping to take advantage of the 26-year-old’s current situation at Stamford Bridge to lure him back to Turin.
Tough Times For The Italian International
The Pensioners full-back has lost his place in the Italian national squad as he is not featuring in Maurizio Sarri’s first-team on a regular basis. The Italian defensive ace has managed to earn just 6 minutes of playing time in the Premier League this season which has left him frustrated. Hence, a move back to his old club could potentially help him reignite his career and help him earn a place back in Italy’s senior team.
Zappacosta signed for Chelsea from Torino last year and had a solid debut campaign under Antonio Conte. However, he has only made five appearances for the Blues of London this season with two assists to his name across all competitions.
What Does Zappacosta Add To Sarri’s Team?
The Italian talent is a well-rounded full-back who can be quite useful at both ends of the pitch. At 26, Zappacosta is currently playing his best football and can be a major threat down the right flank going forward. He is equally good defensively as he always sticks close to his marker to neutralise their threat. However, Zappacosta is not as big of a goal-threat as Marcos Alonso while a lot of people might argue that he is not better defensively than Cesar Azpilicueta.
Should Chelsea Let Him Leave?
So we can understand why Sarri has not been able to field the Italian defender in his starting XI every week. Having said that, it is going to be a long and hard season for the Pensioners as they look to compete on all fronts this season. Hence, Sarri cannot afford to let a player of Zappacosta’s talents leave without bringing in an adequate replacement.
The Italian defender is a great squad option but lacks the quality to get a regular starting place in West London. Thus, it might be best for him to move back to his homeland while Chelsea can use the money generated from his sale to bring in a suitable replacement.
