Scottish football legend Kenny Dalglish indicated that it might not be a bad ploy for Steven Gerrard to sell someone like Alfredo Morelos in the future. We believe what the former Liverpool legend meant was that in a sense Rangers could get good money out of him if they decide to sell as his recent form and performance must have risen his price in the transfer market.
Morelos had earlier claimed that he dreams of playing in the Premier League and the Gers faithful should know that the Colombian would look to move in the future if clubs from the south come calling for him. Dalglish was quoted as saying,”I’m not going to speculate how much any Rangers player might be worth, or what kind of bids they might receive in the future.
“But it certainly does your bargaining power no harm if clubs from England or abroad are showing an interest in the likes of James Tavernier or Alfredo Morelos. Morelos really does have good potential – as long as he keeps to the rules on the park.
He is of no value sitting in the stand. That said, I’m sure Steven Gerrard will want to keep all of his best players at Ibrox. But it may not be harmful to have things to consider. It’s nice to have options.”
Gerrard had also made it clear that all his players are up for sale but only for his new price. He knows that in today’s day age, it is tough to keep hold of players when an exorbitant bid is made. Gerrard would himself know that from his playing career as Liverpool had to sell the likes of Luis Suarez, Xabi Alonso and Fernando Torres even though they were the best players at the club at that time. So saying that a certain player is not up for sale would be naive.
Morelos had attracted interest in the summer from Turkish outfit Besiktas. Even in the 2018 January window, it was reported that Chinese outfit Beijing Renhe had made an offer of £7m. We don’t expect the forward to leave the Gers to go to China, but a move to England certainly cannot be counted out.
The fact that he is in such good form this season (12 goals and eight assists in all competitions) means that the Bears would be able to demand a reasonable price if a club comes calling for him. Selling him might look like a step backwards, but if the club is getting enough money to replace Morelos with a top striker, then Gerrard should be open to the option of selling him.
