Tottenham Hotspur took on West Ham United at the London Stadium earlier tonight hoping to book their place in the next round of the Carabao Cup. Spurs took the fight to the Hammers from the very start and gained the lead in the 16th minute courtesy of Heung-min Son’s brilliant finish. The South Korean forward doubled Spurs’ advantage in the 56th minute to put some daylight between the two teams.
However, the East London club refused to give up without a fight and got a goal back through Lucas Perez’s header, but Mauricio Pochettino’s men restored their two-goal lead just four minutes later when Fernando Llorente scored from close range. The match ended with a final score of 3-1 in favour of Spurs.
Let’s take a look at how each Spurs player performed during the contest against the Hammers.
GK: Paulo Gazzaniga – 8/10
The Tottenham keeper pulled off some solid saves in the first half to keep Spurs’ lead intact. He was not tested as much during the latter stages of the contest.
RB: Serge Aurier – 5.5/10
He started the game brightly but found life difficult dealing with the threat of Ryan Fredericks and Grady Diangana. The Ivorian was average at best during the match.
CB: Juan Foyth – 8/10
The young centre-back made some outstanding interceptions throughout the game and cleared his lines when under pressure. It was a mature display from the 20-year-old at the heart of the Tottenham defence.
CB: Davinson Sánchez – 8/10
It was another commanding display by the Colombian international! He was a Goliath in defence and hardly let the Hammers attackers get the better of him.
LB: Kyle Walker-Peters – 5.5/10
Michail Antonio’s pace gave him a lot of headaches during the encounter, but he did just about enough to see out the win for Spurs.
CM: Harry Winks – 7.5/10
The English talent quietly went about his business in midfield and put on another impressive showing under the lights.
CM: Victor Wanyama – 6/10
He was caught in possession quite a few times in the first half. However, Wanyama did the dirty work in midfield well to help Spurs secure a victory on the night.
RM: Dele Alli – 7.5/10
The former MK Dons sensation did well to set up both of Son’s goals before being subbed at the hour mark.
CAM: Christian Eriksen – 7/10
The Dane was a class act in the opposition half and sprayed some brilliant passes during the contest. He is getting better with each game.
LM: Heung-Min Son – 9/10
The South-Korean international scored a brace of goals on the night which made sure that Spurs booked their place in the quarterfinals of the League Cup.
ST: Fernando Llorente – 7/10
The Spanish frontman was a spectator in the first half. However, he scored with an excellent volley to wrap up the win for his team.
Substitutes:
RM: Georges-Kevin N’Koudou – 5/10
He failed to make an impact after coming on for the final 27 minutes of the contest.
CM: Moussa Sissoko – 6/10
He came off the bench to provide some fresh legs in midfield.
CAM: Oliver Skipp – N/A
The youngster came on for the final few minutes but had little time to make an impact.
