Brendan Rodgers, who emerged as one of the favourites to succeed Steve Bruce at Aston Villa, has come out and cleared the air by indicating that he is likely to stay at Celtic. Earlier it was reported that the Hoops manager was wanted by the new owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens as Rodgers has a good amount of experience in the Championship. The Northern Irish manager guided Swansea City to the Premier League under his tutelage, and his impressive stint with the Welsh outfit landed him a job at Liverpool.
Rodgers reacted to the speculations over Villa job and said,”It (Villa) is a huge club, a Premier League club with great facilities, but I have a great job here, a very exciting challenge this season and I am loving every second of it. So yeah, You can’t rule me out because I’ve never been asked but for me, it’s one where I’m really happy here.”
A move to England was always going to be on the cards in the future but given the calibre of Rodgers and the work which he has done in the past, the 45-year-old is worthy of a job in the English top division. Villa might be a big club but they aren’t in the Premier League at the moment and going to the Championship could have done more harm than enhance Rodgers’ reputation if things didn’t turn out right at Villa Park.
Celtic have had a dodgy start so far in the league but they have the talent and the means to turn things around quickly and Rodgers would once again look to get back to winning ways with the Hoops. If the manager was interested in moving to England now, he might have kept quiet but coming out and clearing the air like that indeed suggests that the gaffer is committed to his current job.
And why not so! Villa are struggling in the Championship at the moment and with Celtic, the former Liverpool manager has a chance to win titles and compete in European competitions. Leaving a club midway wouldn’t have been professional especially when the team hasn’t done too well of late.
Maybe for the first time in his stint at Celtic, Rodgers feels challenged by their rivals and this time he has the chance to prove his worth as earlier not many took his triumphs seriously as it is anyway expected of Celtic to dominate the league.
Now that the club has lost some crucial players in the market and the boat has been rocked a bit, Rodgers would like to come out of these challenging waves unscathed and triumphant and show the world that he can fight off adverse situations.
