Rangers midfielder Jack Thomson has been training with the first team, and one can feel that the 18- year-old could be next in line to be drafted in the senior team soon. Having impressed at the u-20 level, this academy product must be hoping to break in the main squad soon. However, given the options club has in midfield, it could be tough for the 18-year-old Scotsman.
The player recently opened up about his chances in the future and said that leaving Ibrox on loan could be a possibility in the second half of the season. The midfielder was quoted as saying,”That is definitely something that is a possibility for me in the second half of the season(Loan move) and I will look at maybe going out on loan and playing at a different club to get first-team experience. I am not too concerned where that is, as long as I am happy and I am progressing, that is what matters the most.”
“It can go either way for you, a loan move. You can go and be excited about it and then not play and end up a bit down or you can go and get valuable first team experience. That is obviously what I want to do and hopefully, it works out if I do go out.”- he added further.
Thomson has been at Rangers since he was six and is one of the major upcoming talents from the academy. Gerrard definitely seems impressed with him as he has involved him with the first team. Training under a midfielder like Gerrard would definitely help him further.
We believe a loan spell should definitely be sanctioned in January for Thomson as no amount of training can replicate actual match experience. Ibrox is currently laden with talents in midfield as the club have the likes of Andy Halliday, Ryan Jack, Ross McRorie, Lassana Coulibaly, Ovie Ejaria, Graham Dorrans and Scott Arfield all of who can play in the central midfield role, therefore, it doesn’t make sense for the youngster to stay at Ibrox.
Gerrard has already expressed a desire to sign the likes of Ejaria and Coulibaly permanently, so Thomson’s task is definitely going to be cut out if he wants to break in the first eleven in the future. Nevertheless, the former Scotland u-17 international still has age on his side and so maybe in a few years time, he could be a force to reckon with. The key for the Gers board here is to arrange a loan spell where Thomson would get some playing minutes and not just warm the bench.
