According to a recent report by the Evening Standard, Liverpool are eager to tie Joe Gomez down to a new and improved, long-term contract at Anfield. It is understood that the Reds are willing to reward the English defender’s outstanding performances this season with improved terms, but Jurgen Klopp was reluctant to reveal too much about it.
In a recent interview, the Liverpool manager said, “Contract things, we are famous for not talking about until there is a decision. But Joe is a very important part of the squad and it’s so nice to see,”
Klopp also added, “He has a big future here at Liverpool, no doubt about that.”
This recent development would be music to the ears of all Kopites around the world as Joe Gomez has been a revelation for the Merseyside club during this campaign. The English centre-back has formed a formidable partnership with Virgil Van Dijk at the heart of the Liverpool defence which has shipped in just three goals in nine Premier League appearances so far.
There is no doubt that he deserves a pay rise at Anfield which could mean that we would see him play for the Merseyside giants for years to come.
What Does The 21-year-old Defensive Ace Add To Klopp’s Team?
Gomez is very quick with his feet which helps him cover a lot of ground if need be to keep the opposition attackers at bay. He is also aerially dominant and a competent defender who is always looking to improve on the pitch. Moreover, the English international can also feature as a right-back which makes him an invaluable asset for the Reds.
Is It A No-Brainer For The Reds?
The Reds of Merseyside are quite right in trying to reward their young players with new and improved contracts. If Gomez’s recent performances are anything to go by, then Klopp may just have a future star in his hands. The 21-year-old is precisely the type of player who could be nurtured into a world-class centre-back at Anfield so Liverpool would be foolish not to tie him up on a long-term deal.
The likes of Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Harry Wilson and Ryan Kent are Liverpool’s future so keeping them happy in the long run would be a step in the right direction for the Reds as they look to build for a bigger and brighter future at Merseyside.
