A recent report by Devon Live has revealed that Liverpool are hoping to secure the signature of the Dutch youngster Steven Bergwijn. It is believed that the Reds are set to battle it out with some clubs in pursuit of the PSV Eindhoven talent’s services. The 21-year-old has made a name for himself in the Dutch Eredivisie and is widely regarded as one of the best young prospects in European football especially after his impressive displays in the UEFA Champions League this season.
The Emergence Of Steven Bergwijn
Bergwijn started his football journey at ASC Waterwijk before experiencing the youth set-up of AFC Ajax. He made a move to their competitors, PSV Eindhoven in July 2011 and managed to graduate from the club’s esteemed academy after playing at the Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 levels.
The 21-year-old only managed to break into the PSV senior side in 2015 and has since been one of the club’s most important players on the pitch. He has featured in 12 matches for the Dutch giants this season, finding the back of the net five times while grabbing two assists in all competitions. The Dutch prospect has also played for his country at every youth level from Under-17 onwards, but he is yet to secure an international cap for the Dutch national team at a senior level.
What Will The Dutch Talent Add To Klopp’s Side?
Bergwijn is very quick and knows how to dribble with the ball without losing possession effectively. His rapid turn of pace helps him beat the opposing defenders at 1v1 situations which is his biggest strength. However, the Dutch dribbler is still not a prolific shooter, and his distribution leaves a lot to be desired. Furthermore, the PSV starlet also needs to develop his strength if he wants to prove his worth in the Premier League some day.
Is Bergwijn The Right Fit For The Reds?
At the tender age of 21, Bergwijn has massive potential and could be nurtured into a world-class winger. Jurgen Klopp might be the best manager to develop him as the Liverpool boss has shown in the recent past that he can get the best out of his young players as evidenced by the rise of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and Andrew Robertson.
Moreover, the Dutch talent fits Klopp’s style of play as he is young, talented and is willing to work hard at both ends of the pitch. Liverpool should consider snapping him up if they want to build for a bigger and brighter future at Merseyside.
