Livingston defender, Craig Halkett was one of the rocks at the back when Rangers were surprisingly beaten 1-0 on the day last week. The 23-year-old is a former Rangers player and a product of the Gers youth academy. However, he failed to make an appearance for the senior team and was sold by then manager Mark Warburton in January 2016. Since then, the player has shown a considerable amount of improvements, and one can clearly say that he came back to haunt his former team in the league tie earlier.
Now one might think that the defender might be unhappy on how the Gers sold him without giving him a proper opportunity to prove himself but the young centre-back happens to be a Rangers fan, and there is no doubt that he should jump at the opportunity of joining his boyhood side once again.
Not only is the 23-year old a crucial player for Livingston currently, but Halkett is also the club captain, and the Gers should definitely consider making a move for him.
The Light Blues brought in as many as 15 players in the summer with an entirely new looking backline. However, Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley are only going to be at the club until the end of the season. Therefore going after Halkett, in the long run, makes sense.
The Scottish defender is currently in the final year of his contract, and the Gers can look to prise him away in January or for free in the summer. The move in January is unlikely to happen as the defender is a crucial player for Livingston but the Gers can agree on a pre-season contract which would make him a Rangers player in the summer.
Gerrard recently praised the defender for his performance, and the 23-year-old responded to that,”It is good to hear comments like that. It is credit to our defence. Everyone says we enjoy defending all the way from Liam Kelly to the front.”
He further added,”Being a Rangers fan myself, you want to get results against them. I got an earful after the game from my mum and dad — although they were in the Livi end and they will support me first before the team we grew up with. I think they were delighted we managed to get the win.”
Livingston surprisingly sits in the third spot of the league table at the moment even though they were expected to fight for survival at the beginning of the season. For their recent resurgence, Halkett has played an enormous part in defence as they have the second best defensive record in the league behind only Hearts who have conceded just three goals so far in the 7 league games. Gary Holt’s side have conceded 4.
