Steven Gerrard came into the club and made some wholesale changes everywhere from top to bottom. The club added players in every position, and as a result, they signed up as many as 15 players in the summer window. They didn’t spend much and made some smart signings by bringing in free agents and players on loan. However, after the recent exit from the hands of Aberdeen in the League Cup semi-final, Steven Gerrard made a new revelation about how he would still look to improve the squad further by bringing in more players.
Gerrard was quoted as saying.”What I’ll assure everyone is that won’t be our last semi-final. If it means I have to go and buy better quality players for when we get to this stage, that’s what will happen. If the players that we’ve got now don’t improve and start showing the quality we need in the final third, my job is to go and find the players who will.
“Otherwise, we are never going to win anything. The players need to bottle this. Instead of going into a dressing room and being quiet with your head in your hands, self-reflect, take responsibility for your part in it and let’s move forward together.”
The fact that Gerrard mentioned specifically about the quality in the final third suggests that the club is going to add a striker in the future. Lack of options against Aberdeen probably cost Gerrard a shot at his first silverware for Rangers as the Bears bowed out after suffering a narrow defeat. The Gers dominated the game and had 15 shots in total, but they only managed to test the opposition goalkeeper once.
Alfredo Morelos is one of the most critical players for Gerrard right now but the way he has been performing means that he is bound to attract interest from various quarters. There was interest from a French and Turkish outfit in the summer and even in the January window, certain clubs could target Morelos.
The Colombian has already mentioned before that he dreams of playing in the Premier League and if an offer comes from a top division English side, the young forward might push for a move away from the club. So the club still needs to add some players even after going through a complete overhaul of the squad in the summer.
Another area where the club might look to add option is a creative attacking midfielder. After selling Josh Windass, that role has been usually donned by Ovie Ejaria and Scott Arfield who are traditionally central midfielders therefore sometimes they lack the cutting edge to open up defences.
Many would have expected the club to have a silent January transfer window, but this new revelation certainly makes it clear that Gerrard is going to perform more surgeries to the squad until and unless he can get a champion team to challenge Celtic on all fronts.
