Leeds United got back to winning ways against Hull City as they secured a 1-0 win. However, injuries and squad depth is a constant issue for them, and we can expect the Whites to be active in the January transfer window. Recently, the former Chelsea centre-back Robert Huth who was released by Leicester City in the summer claimed that a move to Leeds United would be perfect for him.
The 34-year-old came on as a pundit in a TV programme where the host asked,”Leeds wouldn’t be too bad would it? to which the former German international replied,” It’s perfect.” Huth claimed that he might be past his prime but he isn’t looking to retire and feels that he can give a few more years to football. The centre-back played a big role in Leicester City’s title triumph and he was a great leader in defence for his side. The 34-year-old has an immense amount of experience and maybe the Whites should consider making a move for him.
Both Gaetano Berardi and Conor Shaughnessy are currently injured and United have two centre-back options in Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper. Even Berardi is a fullback who Bielsa turned into a centre back. Shaughnessy is young and quite impressive but one would believe that he couldn’t be trusted at the back for some tough games. Against Swansea City, when Cooper and Jansson both were out with injury, Bielsa opted to use right-back Luke Ayling for the centre-half role for that game. So it is clear that the Whites are already short at the back and a move for Huth might not be a bad ploy for the club.
The 34-year-old is available for free and has almost served a ‘come and get me plea’ to the Whites. He didn’t play regularly for the Foxes last season, but staying with a Premier League club who finished in the top half of the table, the defender should be physically and mentally in decent shape to take on Championship football.
Huth might not play every game but having a player who has the experience of winning the Premier League will come in handy for Bielsa. This current United team is relatively young and when the crunch situation arrives in their promotion run, it’s always good to have some experienced players in some departments.
The German might not be that mobile anymore but he is strong in his duels whether it is on the ground or in the air. The former Stoke City player isn’t too shoddy with the ball at his feet and can handle himself while building up play from the back. Therefore the club should give Huth a short-term contract given the limited options Bielsa has in the centre-back department and maybe we can see him play a good part in United’s promotion pursuit.
