Former Celtic striker and current Tv Pundit Charlie Nicholas has claimed that Brendan Rodgers could leave Celtic as early as January and a move to England looks imminent for the Northern Irish manager. The Hoops have had a stuttering start to their campaign as they missed the train for Champions League qualification and are labouring in their league games as well. Nicholas claims that the relationship between the manager and club CEO Peter Lawwell looks broken and the double treble-winning manager could be on his way out of the club.
Nicholas was quoted as saying,”I am not sure Brendan Rodgers will still be Celtic manager come the end of January. It looks as if the relationship between Brendan and Peter Lawwell is broken. He is a top manager and there would be no shortage of clubs who would be keen to land him if he was to indicate he wanted to leave Celtic Park. Major shareholder Dermot Desmond appears to have had to step in and have some strong words with them both.”
”Brendan seems to have lost some of his drive with everything that has happened since the summer. He probably knows in his head that things are coming to an end. Okay, he may have said he turned down an offer from China, but other more attractive offers will come in. Will he turn them down as easily, especially if he is not getting what he wants at Celtic?”- Nicholas added further.
So it seems like what Nicholas is claiming is that Rodgers might be the one who can walk out of the job from Celtic Park with the major reason being him not being backed enough in the transfer market. It’s true that the club endured a tough transfer period where they lost some of their essential players like Patrick Roberts, Moussa Dembele and Stuart Armstrong. Along with that, the club failed to land their targets like Scott McKenna and John McGinn. So this can be termed as a valid reason but it’s still early days and things can turn around for good in the next few months.
Leaving the club midway would also harm Rodgers’ reputation and he should see until the end of the season come what may. A move to England would tempt the former Swansea City manager and we often see by the time the new year arrives in the Premier League, some managers often lose their job or are on the verge of losing it. So as Nicholas said then it might be interesting to see whether the gaffer would be able to turn down a job from the English top flight.
Celtic currently sit on the sixth spot, six points off Hearts who are on the top of the table. Things can turn around quickly with a few good results and we believe Rodgers is likely to stay at least until the end of the season. The manager still has three years left on his contract and he wouldn’t want to end such a great journey with the club on a sour note.
