Liverpool have enjoyed a rich vein of form in the Premier League since the start of this season, winning six of their eight league matches so far. The Reds are currently occupying the third position in the league standings with only goal difference separating them from Manchester City and Chelsea. However, with a run of favourable league fixtures coming up in the next few weeks, the Merseyside club would be quietly confident about continuing their good form after the international break.
Clyne’s Growing Worries At Liverpool
Since the rapid emergence of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez last season, Nathaniel Clyne has fallen down the Anfield pecking order and is currently the club’s third choice option to take up the right-back duties in Jurgen Klopp’s first-team. The English talent was plagued with injuries last season which left the door wide open for Alexander-Arnold to make his mark in the Liverpool senior side.
However, Clyne now finds himself on the fringes and would need to work hard in training to earn a place back in Klopp’s starting XI. The 27-year-old has just made one appearance for the Reds this season in the League Cup loss against Chelsea which unfortunately ended 2-1 in favour of the Pensioners. The English full-back looked very average in that contest which is why Klopp has often opted to deploy someone else at right back since then.
What Does The English Full-Back Offer To Klopp’s Squad?
Clyne still has a lot of pace in his locker and is a wonderful dribbler with the ball. He has a habit of making overlapping runs which helps his team stretch out the whole playing surface to open up more spaces going forward. At 27, the English right-back is vastly experienced in the Premier League following his spells at Crystal Palace and Southampton earlier in his football career.
Does Clyne Have A Future At Anfield?
He is a great squad player at Klopp’s disposal. However, the form of Alexander-Arnold and Gomez has been sensational over the past few weeks which is why it is difficult to see how Clyne might get more game time under Klopp in the near future.
Hence, making a switch away from Anfield might be the best option for everyone involved as the Reds can reap the benefits from having his wages off the club’s wage bill while the player can reignite his career someplace else.
