According to a recent report by the Sun, Chelsea defender Gary Cahill is eager to stay at Stamford Bridge until the end of this campaign and does not want to leave the club during the January transfer window. It is believed that the English centre-back is willing to stay for the whole season at West London as the Pensioners look set to compete on all fronts this term. This is a change of position from the defender who earlier wanted to leave the club in January itself.
Cahill’s New Role At Stamford Bridge
Since wanting to leave, Cahill has made appearances in the UEFA Europa League, and EFL Cup matches this season which is why the English defender has his heart set on staying beyond this winter transfer period. Since making a switch from Bolton Wanderers at the start of 2012, the Dronfield-born talent has had a hugely successful time with the Blues after winning the Premier League and the FA Cup twice while also lifting the famous UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League trophies during his time at West London.
Chelsea stands a great chance of bagging a major trophy this season under Maurizio Sarri’s tutelage, so it is no surprise that a veteran like Cahill wants to see out this campaign in the hopes of earning another top-level winner’s medal.
What Does Cahill Add To Sarri’s Team?
The 32-year-old has made a total of 286 appearances for the Pensioners with 25 goals and seven assists to his name across all competitions. Cahill has been a wonderful servant for the West London club so it is only fitting if he can end his career on a high by winning another major silverware in the colours of Chelsea.
The former Aston Villa centre-half can read the game well and is still a fantastic leader at Sarri’s disposal. Despite losing a yard of pace, he is still a very capable centre-back and would be a tremendous option for Sarri to call upon during the cup competitions this season.
Should Chelsea Keep Him For The Remainder Of This Campaign?
Cahill is also vocal both on and off the pitch and can inspire the next generation of Chelsea first-teamers by sharing his experiences with them.
Hence, it will be a shrewd move by Sarri to retain his services for the time being as Cahill still has a lot to offer to his side during this campaign. Also, there cannot be any doubt that he would be a perfect cover for when injuries strike the Chelsea defence, which would inevitably happen during a long season.
