According to the latest reports, Celtic captain Scott Brown is going to be targetted by Australian A-League aspirants Western Melbourne. It is believed that the club is looking at a marquee signing and they think that a change in lifestyle after spending the past 17 years in Scottish Premiership could appeal to the 33-year old midfielder.
Brown’s contract is set to expire next summer, and maybe that is the reason why the Australian club is interested in the former Scotland captain. However, there have been plenty of reports and indications that Brown is set to sign a new contract at Park Head. Rodgers had earlier said,”Scott has made it clear he wants to be here, and he knows what we think of him.”
Recently Brown also gave an update about his future. The midfielder was quoted as saying,”Myself, the gaffer and Peter (Lawwell) have been chatting(On a new contract) and it seems to have gone well. ‘I am just concentrating on playing right now. I’ll go and do my badges(coaching license) in the summer but I’ll see how long my legs last before I think about moving upstairs.”
Brown has given a clear indication that he wants to retire to at Celtic and is looking to start his coaching career with them later. Therefore one doesn’t see how the Australian outfit would be able to lure him at this stage.
At 33, the captain is still an essential player in the current setup and he is still keeping young signings out of the playing eleven. With experience, the Scotsman has improved and he has been playing the anchorman’s role to perfection for quite some years. He looks calm and composed on the ball and his ability to dictate play is second to none in the team. Along with that, he is strong and robust in his challenges and not many people get past him.
Maybe a lucrative pay deal can lure him to Australia but that also seems unlikely to happen as the captain is out and out Celtic man. The Hoops have won seven consecutive domestic titles in a row and Brown has been part of all of them as he has been at the club since 2007.
He is already going to go down as a modern-day legend of the game at Park Head and over the years Brown has ignored advances from top flight English clubs. Therefore an offer from Australia shouldn’t be too tough to ignore and Rodgers would also know that his captain is likely to see out his footballing days at Celtic Park.
