According to a recent report by Sportsmole, Gabriel Agbonlahor has revealed that he has no intention of playing in Scotland unless it is either for Celtic or Rangers. The English forward, who is currently a free agent, shed some light on his future and told the Press Association, “I appreciate the offers, it just didn’t feel right,”
“As for the SPL, unless it’s one of the big couple of clubs, to be honest, that doesn’t excite me,”
Agbonlahor: Villa’s Loyal Servant
The Birmingham-born talent left Aston Villa earlier this year after 14 years at the West Midlands club which saw him make 391 appearances in all competitions. Agbonlahor had 86 goals and 57 assists to his name while playing for the Villans and has the honour of being the club’s record goalscorer in the Premier League.
He helped Villa challenge for promotion back to the English top-flight last season, but Steve Bruce’s side fell in the final hurdle as Fulham defeated them 1-0 in the Sky Bet Championship play-off final at the Wembley Stadium. Despite being released by the club earlier this summer, Agbonlahor has no intention of hanging up his boots just yet and is still looking for a new challenge.
Celtic’s Lack Of Firepower This Season
Following the departure of Moussa Dembélé last summer, Celtic have found life hard under Brendan Rodgers this season. They are currently lying in the 2nd spot of the Scottish Premiership standings, just three points behind the league leaders, Heart of Midlothian. The Hoops have scored 17 goals in 9 league matches so far this season, but as of this moment, they lack enough firepower up top.
Leigh Griffiths and Odsonne Edouard are the only two senior forwards for Rodgers to call upon at Celtic Park. The duo has registered 13 goals in between them during this campaign so the Bhoys can undoubtedly benefit from bringing in another fresh face to help ease their workload in the final third.
Will The English Talent Be A Good Fit For The Hoops?
Agbonlahor could potentially be an intelligent option for the Celtic boss if he wants to bring in an experienced head who knows how to find the back of the net. The 32-year-old is currently available for free and has a lot of top-level experience under his belt. The English forward might be heading into the twilight years of his football career, but he still offers some pace and goal-threat up top which makes him an ideal option from the bench.
Should Rodgers Make A Move For Agbonlahor?
There is no doubt that the Glaswegian giants should be aiming to recruit someone with more potential and long-term value. However, Agbonlahor will be an experienced head in the dressing room which might help get the best out of some of the younger stars at Celtic Park such as Edouard, Olivier Ntcham and Eboue Kouassi. Hence, Rodgers should consider snapping him up on a free transfer in the near future.
